"If we do not hang together, we shall surely hang separately." -Thomas Paine

Thomas Paine was born on Janurary 29, 1737 and grew up in Thetford, England. His father believed highly in his son's education but by the age of 12 he had failed out of school. He tried to learn the family trade, but could never learn it so he went out to sea at the age of 19. In 1774, Paine met Benjamin Franklin, who helped him move to Philadelphia where he started his journalism career. In 1776 he published the well known "Common Sense" pamhplet supporting a strong american independence from England, which got him VERY well known across the country. He joined the Continental Army, but was not a very good soldier. During that he wrote, "The Crisis", which inspired the army. This pamphlet was so popular that more people read it than the amount of people who watch the Super Bowl.
In 1791-1792 Paine went back to Europe and wrote, "The Rights of Man", which talked about the rights of man after the French Revolution. Due to this, he became a wanted man for his anti-monarchist views, but avoided being arrested by fleeing to France. In 1973 he was arrested in France for not supporting the execution of Louis XVI. During this period of time he wrote the first part of his most famous work at the time, the anti-church text "The Age of Reason" (1794-1796). He was freed in 1794 after almost being executed. He remained in France until 1802 when he returned to America on an invitation from Thomas Jefferson. He died on June 8, 1809 at the age of 72 in New York City.

Common Sense!!
"Common Sense" was what really got Paine noticed byexternal image Common-Sense-Pamphlet.jpg Americans. After this was published he influenced many Americans to want their independence from England and really rallied them together as a country. His writings were very influential and many Americans learned his name by this particular pamphlet.
This really affected the history of America because he got many more people to fight for their freedom and he was the pushing force that motivated them to get their independence. This ended in America being a free country which would effect the world in the following years to come.

The way authors write and their ability to persuade people is really what makes them stick around for a long time. Paine was writing somehing that he wanted people to really think about and made some people even change thier views toward their independence from Britain, so he is very powerful at the art of persuasion. Other people who are writing a novel (that would eventually be considered a classic) would be very good with different writing styles and techniques and the way that they describe things.
